Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this course for?

This step-by-step introductory 'Learning to Look' course is designed for beginner-level adult learners. No prior knowledge or experience required.

However, it will benefit anyone with an interest in movies, film, or cinema or educators needing training in film studies.

It is strongly recommended you take this course before our other courses in film/media studies.

What is the difference between this course and your other film studies courses?

This course is a stand-alone version of the Learning to Look at Film mini-course. It is often bundled with or offered as an add-on to our other film/media studies courses.

The difference is that this course only includes an introduction to film studies and analysis. It does not include any film history or theory.

If you have already taken this course OR are interested in global cinema, film history or theory, please enroll in one of our other film/media studies courses instead.

What if I've already seen a million movies?

Fantastic! This course is designed to help you see movies differently. Your experience and prior knowledge provide the perfect base for a deeper exploration of the magic behind the movies, how to watch films with a critical eye..

How long will it take?

Approximately 2 hours, not including readings, coursework or film viewing.

If it takes more, no worries! If it takes less, more movie time!!!

When do we meet?

We do not meet at a specific time. This course is entirely online, asynchronous and self-paced.
